What this is
A powder. Sprinkled on a dressed candle, laid in a line, or carried in a bag — it feeds a working rather than being one.
The practice
What this tradition does with an object like this — how it is used, not a promise about what follows.
How it is used
- 1A pinch on a dressed candle, or laid in a thin line where it needs to be — a threshold, a doorway, the inside of a shoe.
- 2Whatever is left can be carried in a bag rather than thrown away.
Working it properly
The craft under the instructions — direction, count and order. This is the part that is normally only said across a counter.
- Laid as a line rather than scattered — a threshold, the width of a doorway, the inside of a shoe, under a mat where it will not be swept up by the afternoon.
- On a candle it goes onto the oil, never onto bare glass, because the wet coat is what holds it.
- Where it is being laid for someone to walk over, it is laid thin enough not to be seen. A powder that is noticed has stopped being a powder.
- What is left is bagged and kept rather than binned. A made powder is counted as still in use until it is gone.
